Japanese Pop Artist Chiho Aoshima lives and works in Tokyo and is a member of Takashi Murakami's Kaikai Kiki Collective. Chiho Aoshima’s work involves surreal scenes and dreamscapes, often including ghosts, demons, nature and young women. Well known works by Chiho Aoshima include Japanese Apricot 2, Little Boy, A Contented Skull and City Glow, Mountain Whisper.
Chiho Aoshima uses computer technology to create detailed and complex images of fantasy worlds. Chiho Aoshima seamlessly integrates the age-old tradition of Japanese scroll painting with the contemporary aesthetics of manga, the pop phenomena of Japanese comic books and graphics. Like manga Aoshima’s works are frequently full of apocalyptic or grotesque imagery. Her characters routinely find themselves in dire and surreal circumstances which they gracefully endure, looking out at their viewers with ambiguous, seductive gazes.
The works of Chiho Aoshima are considered to be Superflat, the postmodern art movement which was founded by Takashi Murakami. The style is typified by the simple and emphatically two-dimensional forms employed by a generation of young Japanese artists.
Aoshima graduated from Department of Economics, Hosei University, Tokyo. She had a residency at Art Pace, San Antonio, Texas in 2006 before she began working in Takashi Murakami’s factory with no formal art training.
Chiho Aoshima has exhibited internationally in London, Tokyo, New York, Paris, Washington DC, Boston and Los Angeles. Her work is held in a number of collections including Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, and the Seattle Art Museum. She has also worked in collaboration with Naoki Takizawa for Issey Miyake’s 2001 Spring/Summer collection.
