From humble beginnings in 1934 when Hammer Films, recently founded, was based in a three-room office suite at Regent Street, London, Hammer went on to dominate the horror film market. At the height of its success Hammer enjoyed worldwide distribution and, with it, considerable financial reward, helped by successful partnerships with major US studios such as Warner Bros, Seven Arts and Twentieth Century Fox; even winning the Queens Award for Industry in 1968.
Thoroughly British, the company name originated from the stage name of William Hinds - Hammer's founder - which he took from Hammersmith; the area of London in which he lived. Though Hammer produced a variety of genre films from science fiction, thrillers, Film Noir and comedy, they are indisputably best-known for their Gothic Horror Films of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, which propelled them to phenomenal success as the leading British production company, defining a whole genre. The term 'Hammer Horror' became synonymous with any horror film made in a similar style, even when produced by rival companies!
Over the years Hammer have worked with an impressive roster of writers, directors and stars, including Vincent Price, Val Guest, Stephanie Beacham, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Terence Fisher, Oliver Reed, Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch, Bette Davis, Diana Dors and Vera Day, producing internationally acclaimed films including The Quatermass Xperiment, The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Devil Rides Out and many, many more.
