American painter Laurie Hogin grew up in Connecticut. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she studied studio art and cultural anthropology. Animals such as monkeys feature prominently in Hogin's work, and her paintings are to be viewed as social commentaries on 21st century ideals of economy, identity and culture. Her images mimic that of Dutch still life paintings - in colour, contents and atmosphere. The paintings parody the commerciality of art itself: her works ask the viewer questions on artistic formula and taxonomy of product.
