Neill Othen

A graduate in media technology, Neill Othen brings a great amount of knowledge of graphics to his works. Othen began experimenting with graphics around the age of twelve and now has a BSc (Hons) degree in Media Technology and a background of creating stretching back over twenty years and has exhibited all over the UK.

With clean lines and bold symbols, Othen creates aesthetically powerful images - often monochrome, offset with a single colour. Distinctive iconic butterflies and bold colour schemes are often featured in his highly recognisable, graphic, pop art style work. A modern, graphic approach is employed yet used to focus on the timeless and eternal. His work celebrates and encourages going beyond the modern world of consumerism, to escape, transcend, and to dream.

Whilst keeping images characteristically neat and simple, the artist chooses his subjects carefully. By including familiar letters and pretty butterfly outlines, his work connects with viewers - and avoids the clinical appearance associated with graphic art. Othen's images may look computer printed, but are meticulously painted - adding to the personal feel of his work.

Othen’s work is highly iconic and often features the distinctive, repeated butterfly image in a bold red, black and white colour scheme. Butterfly #1 is the first of Othen’s paintings ever to use this iconic butterfly scheme, it is a clear statement of intent and a beginning of what has been Othen’s most successful series of work to date. In that way it is definitely Butterfly #1 - the first, the starting point and a very important and significant painting in the evolution of his work.

As for the meaning beneath the canvases, Neill is refreshingly light-hearted: 'Perhaps the butterfly is me. Perhaps the butterfly is you. Perhaps the butterfly is everyone. Perhaps it's just a butterfly.'
