Robin Clare

1978

Robin Clare uses humour and imagery in her work to quietly subvert, taking inspiration from urban environments and working mainly with elements from impermanent everyday situations. She is obsessed with discarded and found objects which she uses provocatively, though humorously, in place of the human figure. The text in Clare’s work, taken from diverse references from popular culture and the media, music and poetry which have become part of our everyday vocabulary and reference systems, interacts with the seemingly incongruous images to communicate a meaning which is not present in the text or the objects alone.

 

Evocative of the Pop Art and urban traditions which influence her, Clare’s works are produced in blocks of bold colour and eye-popping patterns using numerous different techniques including line drawing, painting and stencilling.

 

Born in Belize to Jamaican parents, Clare has lived in Belize, Jamaica, Canada and the UK. While in Canada she completed her foundation studies in studio arts and also gained a qualification as an architectural draftsman. In 2004 Clare graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Painting from the University of the Arts, London, and has had solo and group shows across the UK and internationally, and has works in private and public collections in Europe, Asia, North America and Jamaica.
